Many motor cruisers and powerboaters have limited knowledge and experience when they purchase their first boat, which makes these courses all the more valuable. There are a number of one day courses to improve knowledge of specific pieces of equipment, some of which are legal requirements. If you want to know more about the theory side of cruising, the first step is the Day Skipper Shorebased Course. This is aimed at both beginners and experienced crew who would like to become actively involved in navigation. The syllabus will provide training Skippers with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar water

Attending any of these courses will improve your safety, and add to your enjoyment by providing you with increased confidence through knowledge.

RYA VHF/GMDSS Course

This one day course for the Short Range Certificate (SRC) covers all the radio procedures to enable you to legally use a VHF radio. Radio users that are not operating under license may receive heavy fines. This course is mandatory if you wish to attend an RYA Yachtmaster practical exam or gain a Commercial Endorsement.

This one day course is increasingly popular as plotting and radar equipment has become more advanced. Radar is an invaluable aid for navigation and collision avoidance, but it is only useful in the hands of a knowledgeable operator.

RYA/MCA Basic Sea Survival Course

This one day course prepares you to stay alive in an emergency. It will show you how to make the best use of a liferaft and you will learn some basic survival techniques. This course is mandatory if you wish to gain a Commercial Endorsement.

Preparation for survival, lifejackets, search and rescue, and includes a two-hour session in a swimming pool with a liferaft.

Basic Navigation & Safety

This course is the perfect step to the more in-depth Day Skipper shorebased course, or to courses on the water such as Helmsman or Day Skipper courses. Course topics include: charts and publications, safety, engine checks, buoyage, tidal awareness, navigation, pilotage, rules of the road, anchoring, weather forecasts and passage planning.

Day Skipper Shorebased

In our opinion this is the most important course in the RYA syllabus. Beginners and Crew who would like to become actively involved in navigation should attend. The syllabus provides would be Skippers with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. Basic seamanship, meteorology and an introduction to navigation with a basic knowledge of lights also included - in case of late return to your marina.

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Course

A Course for more experienced Skippers, which takes them up to the theory knowledge required for Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Practical Examination. Course includes, Navigation, meteorology, collision avoidance, safety and passage planning.

Knowledge equivalent to the Day Skipper Shorebased course

Assumed knowledge

Navigation to Day Skipper standard and some practical experience

Ability After Course

Theory knowledge of the principles of navigating for coastal and offshore passages.
