RYA National Powerboat Scheme
RYA Powerboat level 2, RYA powerboat intermediate, RYA powerboat advanced traing courses and RYA powerboat instructor training on the River Hamble, Solent are all available at Marine Matters, 01489 579589. Powerboating is a great way to get on the water; the sport has a wide range of options in terms of boat size, range and power and almost anyone can get involved. Best of all, you can cover the basics in 2 days, which will qualify you to powerboat level 2 and ICC (required for operation abroad).
The National Powerboat Scheme is applicable to sports boats, RIBs, ski boats, dories, launches and other boats that do not normally provide accommodation or cooking facilities.
Course content includes introduction to boating techniques, launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment, and background theory.

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat Skipper and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. All you need to know for self-sufficient powerboating at a basic level. Course includes launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills required for basic competence in a powerboat.

Powerboat Intermediate Course
Covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques. A progression from Level 2, introducing pilotage, navigation and boat handling techniques for planing craft on coastal waters by day.

Eligibility for the RYA Powerboat Instructor course
Candidates must fulfil the following criteria before taking part in the 3-day instructor training course:
- Minimum age 16 (no candidates will be accepted for training under this age)
- At least 5 season’s logged experience of powerboating, preferably in a range of boat types and sizes. For those who use powerboats as an integral part of their full time occupation this period is reduced to one season.
- RYA National Powerboat Certificate Level 2
- Valid First Aid certificate (either the RYA’s First Aid certificate, or one recognised by the Health & Safety Executive, covering the treatment of hypothermia and a minimum of six hours course length)
- Existing Instructors wishing to teach the Safety Boat Course must hold that level of certificate themselves
Existing Instructors wishing to teach the Advanced course must hold that level of certificate themselves, already be a Powerboat Level 2 Instructor and attend a two-day endorsement course (Minimum age 17 years)

International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
European countries are increasingly expecting visiting vessels to hold a certificate of competence, without which they are legally allowed to impound your vessel, at your cost, until you can produce a valid certificate. If you are planning to cruise within Europe and the Mediterranean the RYA and MCA recommends Skippers to hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). Any candidate who wishes to be endorsed for operation on inland waterways requires the CEVNI test. This is a multiple choice paper that can be taken at the same time as the ICC exam.
New rules introduced in January 2005 mean that if a powerboat school tests you or the boat used is of 10m or less you can only be certified up to 10m. For motor cruisers over 10m you will be certified up to 24m either on your own boat or our Training Centres F44 motor cruiser, "Dark Angel"
This qualification is only available to BRITISH CITIZENS or bona fide BRITISH RESIDENTS, and is valid for British flagged vessels only.
There are 3 ways to obtain an ICC valid for power vessels up to 10m:
- By completing the ICC application form and attaching a photocopy of your Practical certificate at Powerboat Level 2 and above. For clarification of the level of certification you may acquire consult the list of certificates eligible for conversion on the back of the ICC application form.
- If you have previous experience, but no qualification to proof it, you can take a practical test at our RYA Training Centre, which is authorised to carry out ICC tests. The test lasts approximately a day and can be taken on your own boat or one provided by our Training Centre. The test includes; questions on safety, collision avoidance, navigation and pilotage. There will also be a practical test where you need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of ability in close quarters, MOB and safe high speed handling.
- If you are a novice you can do a course at our Training Centre. You can enrol on a 2 day course, where we will teach you to the required standard, as specified in 2) above.
