About Us

The Marine Matters team

Since our inception in 2001 Marine Matters has gone from strength to strength by directing our focus on customer service and our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme to ensure high quality at a competitive price. Our excellent reputation is something of great value to us so we endeavour to maintain this by constantly working to find improvement in our service. The result is Excellence as Standard.

Marine Matters Staff Profiles

Henry Hillier - Owner and Director, has spent the 30 years on the water. He started on dinghies before progressing to sail cruising and power boating all of which has provided experience of life in the leisure boating industry. Henry went on to serve as a Royal Marine where he spent 10 years working globally in the world renowned Landing Craft Branch. He is also qualified to teach and examine powerboating and motor cruising up to Yachtmaster standard. The experience gained as a professional seaman whilst with the Royal Marines and at Marine Matters has provided Henry with a standard of professionalism and attitude to safety that has ensured a deservedly good reputation. Henry has combined his high standards and experience as a professional seaman with his many years of leisure boating to drive Marine Matters to the leading edge of the industry.

Lisa Hitchman - Office Manager, has a background in the marine leisure industry having worked for marine businesses for the past decade. All customer contacts are dealt with by Lisa which ensures next day delivery of paperwork, friendly telephone advice and immediate email responses. Lisa is instrumental in ensuring that the service we provide meets our commitment of excellence as standard.

Brett Jordan-Davies - Chief Instructor, has been with us for many years as a freelance Instructor but early in 2010 we finally managed to talk him into a permanent contract. These days Brett teaches all levels from Powerboat level 1 to Yachtmaster and achieves fantastic results, his YM exam results currently run at over 95%. Brett has an easy going teaching style which is always appreciated by his students. A consummate professional who always gives his very best - with the customer feedback to prove this.

Jean Marchant - Accounts, joined us in 2006 and looks after our day to day accounts, helps us maintain our reputation as a company that pays on time and ensures that all our Skippers are paid within 7 days of invoicing. Jean's contribution to a strong team ensures the excellent service you expect as standard. Over the years Jean has become a confidant to all of us and is a invaluable and trusted member of the team.

Chas Clarke - Apprentice, joined us in the summer of 2010 so that we could train him in all the boat maintenance we require. Running a Training Centre we have great need of a general maintainer/repairer just to maintain the high standard of all our equipment. So when you are happy with the condition of the kit we provide you have Chas to thank. In a very short time he has become a popular and integral member of the Marine Matters team.

The Instructional Team at our disposal is vast due to the Marine Matters Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Programme designed to keep all our instructors engaged and up to speed with best practice as well as keeping the danger of skills drift at bay. All our freelance Instructors are enrolled on the CPD programme and attend regular training. As a result of this instructor engagement and our commitment to our team we have a network of Skippers and Instructors that can operate around the coast from Essex on the East Coast to Cornwall on the West Coast enabling us to provide Training and Delivery services at a local level as well as worldwide.
